Plot
Plot is the structure of events that make up a story. When analyzing a short story the first thing to do is look back at the events and find the most important points. The easiest way to do this is to make a list of the events in order. The most important thing to identify is the conflict. Conflict is the problem that the character is faced with. Conflict will be discussed in more detail when we talk about character. Once you have identified the main conflict then you can find the plot points. Plot is divided into the following:
Opening Situation
The characters and setting of the story are introduced. Inciting Force
A conflict is established. Rising Action
Suspense builds as the conflict develops. Climax
The point of the story with the most suspense and where the conflict is resolved. Falling Action
The events that lead to the final outcome of the story. Final Outcome
The conclusion of the story, where the loose ends are usually wrapped up. |
Here is an example for "The Shining Houses" by Alice Munro.
Opening Situation The story starts off with Mary enjoying a quiet conversation with her neighbour Mrs. Fullerton. Unlike the inhabitants of the new subdivision, Mrs. Fullerton has lived in her house for 50 years and has a very simple way of life. Over the years she has made herself completely self-sufficient by growing her own fruits and vegetables and raising animals in her yard. Inciting Force/ Rising Action After leaving Mrs. Fullerton's, Mary attends a party with some of the family's in the community, who express their distaste for Mrs. Fullerton's way of life. They all think Mrs. Fullerton's house is an eye-sore and draw up a petition to have it taken down. Climax The climax of the story is when Mary is asked to sign the petition and she refuses. Falling Action/ Final Outcome Mary tries to convince her neighbours that they shouldn't go through with this, but all of her attempts fail. She tried her best, but she couldn't change their mind. |
