Theme is a very broad topic, and refers to the main message of the story. Sometimes a story will focus on a single theme, other times it will have many. Overall, the theme is the message that the reader can take away from the story.

Old vs. New
|
The main theme of "The Shining Houses" is old vs. new. Mary is caught in a rapidly changing society and struggles with the views of her neighbours. The struggle between old and new is represented in the conflicts between characters as well as the setting. The ruggedness of Mrs. Fullerton's house and her self-sufficient way of life strongly contrast with the perfection of the new subdivision and the fast paced way of life of the neighbours.

People Who Win
|
Another theme deals with people who win. The neighbours represent the strength of opinion and society. They are good people who just want a good life for their families, but sometimes they don't have the best morals. They always get what they want and often fail to look at a situation from another person's point of view. No matter what Mary says, she can not change their mind about the petition. This story forces you to assess your own morals and learn to consider other people's point of view.
